CHAPEL HILL – UNC Health Care is now offering a one-click mobile app that enables patients and healthcare providers to connect for live video visits and consultations. Availability is limited currently to select providers but much wider access is promised in coming months, UNC Health says.

The launch comes after a pilot program in which UNC Health worked with American Well.

UNC Health patients who utilize the online My UNC Chart patient portal can access the app, which is free to download for both Apple and Android devices.

“After the completion of a successful pilot, we’re confident this workflow will enable UNC Health Care to expand our services across the state, with an innovative yet intuitive workflow for both providers and patients,” said Robert Gianforcaro, UNC Health Care’s Executive Medical Director of Population Health & Virtual Care, in the announcement.

The app is designed to provide access to electronic health records and to ease workflow for healthcare providers while offering patients the chance to “receive healthcare services and interactions in a way that is both personal and convenient,” according to Mike Barid, president of American Well.

UNC Health Care says patients can:

  • Participate in a video visit with their provider outside of the doctor’s office when and where they choose
  • Utilize their mobile phone, tablet or desktop to participate in a video visit without needing any special equipment
  • Access specialists and primary care physicians
  • Add family members to participate as part of a video visit
