DURHAM – The American Tobacco Campus in Durham will be keeping two of its earliest tenants in new deals announced Tuesday.

Both Duke University and media agency McKinney have signed long-term leases to maintain offices at the former tobacco company through 2030 and 2031 respectively.

Duke committed to the campus in 2003 and McKinney in 2004. The agreements cover some 180,000 square feet of space.

“What do these partnerships mean? Imagine a Durham without not only American Tobacco but very possibly without the Durham Performing Arts Center. When Duke and McKinney signed those early leases, they essentially flipped the switch on the bright future that many of us now tend to take for granted,” says Michael Goodmon, vice president of real estate for Capitol Broadcasting Company, the owner of the campus.

“The entire ATC and CBC teams are thrilled to continue these partnerships with one of the world’s leading universities and one of the country’s most dynamic creative agencies, writing new chapters that we’re confident will be every bit as exciting, positive and eventful.”

Capitol Broadcasting is the parent company of WRAL TechWire.

Duke bases information technology, financial services, university counsel, corporate education, alumni affairs and other operations at ATC with more than 700 people.
