The new Apple iPhone XS and XS Max have features many users craved: longer battery life, a 12MP dual lens camera with “zero shutter lag,” and a processor capable of augmented reality.

Apple says its new iOS 12 software and an A12 Bionic chip will “Take users to the next generation of apps.” It has a 6-core CPU, 4-core GPU, and 8 core dedicated machine learning engine. The processor according to Apple’s Phil Schiller, is capable of five trillion processes per second. It is by far “The most advanced iPhone we ever created,” Schiller said.

The company showed off the new phones’ processing power by demonstrating augmented reality games that will be available for the new phones later this year.

It is Apple’s largest smartphone to date with a 5.8 inch screen on iPhone XS and a 6.5 inch display on XS Max with what Apple calls “Liquid Retina Display.” Schiller called it “The most advanced ever in a smartphone.”

The iPhone X also got rid of the home button to make room for more screen and introduced facial-recognition technology to unlock the device.

The new phones have 512GB of storage, enough to hold 200,000 photos. The iPhone XS will have an extra hour of battery life, and the XS Max, 90 minutes more. The new phones also have facial recognition software

Both will have dual SIM cards, which will allow users to swap between different mobile plans, especially useful to travelers moving between different network zones. They’re also made with newly created stronger glass, which may help prevent the cracked screens on the smartphones. Both its waterproofing and dust resistance have been improved, Apple says.

The iPhone camera “Is the world’s most popular camera,” Schiller said. The advanced features on the new phones use a neural engine that can take multiple frame shots at once and combine them. Users can slide f-stops from f/2 to f16 and observe the depth of field adjust on screen even after taking the shot. It can blur the background to make portraits standout.

A third phone introduced, the iPhone Xr shares many of the features of the other two new phones. At  $749, it is significantly lower-priced than the iPhone XS, which will sell for $999, and the iPhone XS Max for $1099. Both go on sale Friday, Sept. 14 and will be available Sept. 21.

By making more expensive iPhones, Apple has been able to boost its profits despite waning demand as people upgrade phones less frequently. IPhones fetched an average price of $724 during the April-June period, a nearly 20 percent increase from a year earlier.

Worldwide smartphone sales grew just 2 percent during the second quarter of 2018, according to the research firm Gartner Inc. During that period, which is typically slow for Apple, China’s Huawei Technologies surpassed Apple as the second-largest seller of smartphones based on Gartner’s calculations. Samsung remained in the lead.
