RALEIGH – Google Fiber and The Raleigh Housing Authority will join business and civic leaders Saturday to announce installation of free gigabit internet service for residents of the Mayview affordable housing community.

The Mayview initiative aims to help bridge the digital divide, the gap between people with ready access to the internet and those without. Addressing the issue of digital equity can play a role in removing barriers to education and economic mobility.

An event at Mayview Community Center at 1103 Parker Street from noon to 4 p.m. will include Google Fiber demos in a “block party” atmosphere. Residents will be able to sign up for free in home Google Fiber service.

The Kramden Institute and Google Fiber will provide ongoing digital literacy training and support to residents.
