DURHAM – Duke University will join five other schools as the first to integrate their student ID cards to the Apple Wallet app, the company announced at its Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose, California.

The app will be available in the fall with the iOS 12 updates for the iPhone and WatchOS 5.

The integration will replace student ID cards with Apple Watches and iPhone IDs. The IDs provide access to dorms, libraries, bookstores, vending machines, laundry services and events.

The other schools are the University of Alabama, University of Oklahoma, Johns Hopkins, Santa Clara University and Temple.

Apple CEO Tim Cook is a Duke alumni. He earned an MBA there in 1988 and recently spoke at the recent Duke graduation ceremony. He previewed some of the privacy concerns Apple addressed in its operating system and device updates disclosed fully at the Developer Conference Monday.

Reports have suggested Apple is considering the Research Triangle for a new  corporate campus. Unconfirmed rumors suggest the company may have already signed a lease for a property in Cary.
