RALEIGH — The chief executive officer of Raleigh-based Red Hat Inc. has sold $6.3 million worth of stock in the software company.

James M. Whitehurst sold 39,751 shares he directly owned. He sold 28,550 shares at a price of $159.04 and another 11,201 at a price of $159.93, according to a Form 4 filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Whitehurst, the former chief operating officer at Delta Air Lines Inc., now directly owns 338,612 shares in the company worth $54. 2 million.

The transactions were made April 20.

Red Hat provides open-source software for operating systems, cloud storage and other computer functions. It distributes Linux, which translates requests from all other software on a computer to the computer’s hardware.

The company announced today the general availability of its new storage service. Red Hat Storage One is a program meant to handle the varying workloads and storage-requirements of businesses.

Red Hat’s shares closed Wednesday at $158.14, down $1.96, or 1.22 percent, from the previous day’s close.
