RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – AT&T continues to ramp up its efforts to deploy true wireless broadband (gigabit speeds) known as 5G with the Triangle and Charlotte slated to begin landing faster capabilities later this year.

The communications giant on Friday morning disclosed its latest 5G moves, including plans to launch what it calls 5G Evolution in more than 100 markets.

AT&T’s latest moves are not true 5G  since standards and technology are still underdevelopment as well as devices to utilize the new tech.

However, the company says 5g Evolution does offer up to double current wireless speeds.

“We plan to broadly make 5G Evolution technology and the capabilities it enables available in over 500 markets later this year, including in parts of Baltimore; Charlotte, N.C.; Cleveland; Denver; Detroit; Jacksonville, Fla.; Kansas City; Las Vegas; New York City; Philadelphia; Portland; Raleigh; Salt Lake City; Seattle; and Washington, D.C.,” AT&T said in a statement.

5g Evolution is already available in Atlanta, Chicago, San Diego, Nashville and other markets.

AT&T recently disclosed testing results of speeds topping one gigabit as well as little latency and minimal impact from weather conditions.
