MORRISVILLE – Lenovo’s Motorola mobile phone business unit has another new leader.

On Monday in a blog post, Motorola said that Sergio Buniac (pictured with this post) had been promoted to serve as Lenovo Mobile Business Group co-president and Motorola chairman and president. Although the blog was published Monday, Buniac’s corporat bio says that he took over from Aymar de Lencquesaing in February.

Lenovo confirmed earlier this month that it had laid off an unspecified number of Motorola employees in Chicago where the Motorola group is based. Lenovo acquried Motorola Mobility from Google in 2014. The hiring of Buniac is the latest in a series of executive changes made at the unit and across Lenovo as it has tried to turn around its mobility business.

“When considering a successor to lead our business, we looked within our halls here at Motorola. And that search quickly led us to a longtime Motorolan,” Motorola said in the blog.

“With over 20 years of service at Motorola, Sergio’s CV combines end-to-end industry experience including a strong track record of growth in leading our Latin America business (we are now #2 in that market!), as well as stints in strategic planning and product management.”

The blog acknowledged the many changes in management and also promised new products.

“We realize we’ve had a great deal of transformation over the past years, and we’re grateful for our fans’ support and commitment,” the blog said. “We’re excited for what 2018 (and beyond!) is going to bring us and look forward to sharing our first products of the year with you next month!”

Lenovo operates one of its two global headquarters in Morrisville. The other is located in Beijing.
