CARY – Fortnite Battle Royale, an increasingly popular title with millions of players despite repeated problems with its servers, is now going mobile in what Cary-based Epic Games represents as “the future of games.”

In a blog post, the team of developers behind Fortnite, which is free to play and features an apocalyptic world filled with zombies, says the mobile version will support “cross play” across multiple platforms.

“This means players across devices can squad up with friends and play together,” Fortnite’s team wrote.

“We believe this is the future of games. The same game on all platforms. Console quality graphics and action. Play when you want, where you want.”

Crssplay involves PlayStation 4, PC, Mac and iOS.

Mobile play comes first via Apple iOS with Android under development.

“On phones and tablets, Fortnite is the same 100-player game you know from PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac. Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates.”

Players can sign up for an “invite event” beginning March 12 at the Fortnite website.

“When you are invited, you will receive an email with a link to download the game from the App Store,” the Fortnite team adds.

Device specs include:  iPhone 6S/SE, iPad Mini 4, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad 2017 devices.
