APEX – Matt Oelfke and Rob McLaughlin, former Epic Games employees that worked on Gears of War and Unreal Tournament, recently launched the first part of the episodic single-player campaign game for Windows PC, Golem Gates.

It’s the first launch for Oelfke and McLaughlin’s new Apex-based company, Laser Guided Games, and it’s an original concept. The dark fantasy game delivers intense single-player content that requires combat and strategy, and blends multiple genres to create a unique experience, a spokesperson for the company said.

The game also has a collectible card component. In Golem Gates, players collect cards—called Glyphs—and build a deck to prepare for battle. Battles are fast-paced and highly tactical with streamlined resource management to keep the focus on the unrelenting action.

Some of the interesting game mechanics include:

  • Dynamic Diversity—Create unique battle plans that require critical strategic decisions using more than 100 collectible Glyphs.

  • Multiple Modes—Experience the evolving story of Golem Gates’ single-player campaign and take the fight online with friends in cooperative and survival-based modes.

  • May the RNG Gods Smile Upon You—Multiple randomized Glyph drawings eliminate monotonous build sequences and reward master deck building and strategic planning while simultaneously ensuring a rapidly changing battlefield.

  • Streamlined Strategy—Glyphs are the key to successful campaigns. Capture resources in King of the Hill style skirmishes without dedicated gathering units and keep your focus where it belongs—on the battle.

  • Fight Where You Have Sight—Glyphs can be played almost anywhere you have an existing presence, expanding the theater of your campaign.

Oelfke and McLaughlin partnered with Josh Nizzi of Hollow Earth Inc. to construct the gaming world of Golem Gates. Hollow Earth specializes in art design and story development, and Nizzi brought prior experience working on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Iron Man, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and the Transformers franchise.

“We can’t wait for players to dive deeper into the dark and dangerous world of Golem Gates,” said Nizzi in a statement. “Stay tuned for even more twists and revelations ahead!”
