Coupons via QR codes are set for a “second coming,” and Apple’s iPhones are the big driver, says a new study.

Juniper Research forecasts that QR code coupons will explode in usage over the next five years, surging to 5.3 billion by 2022. That’s up from an estimated 1.3 billion this year.

You can thank Apple for the market-moving news.

“Apple’s addition of QR code reading facilities directly addresses a major barrier for use in Western markets,” says research author Lauren Foye.

“The lack of an in-built reader had been a hindrance, with consumers needing to download a separate QR code scanner app.”

Juniper describes the rebirth of QR codes and coupons as “the second coming.”

Juniper notes that “retailers are set to take advantage of an increasingly receptive audience for QR codes. For example, US retailer Target announced a QR code-based payments system to scan offers directly to their device stored payment cards, which can then be scanned at checkout for instant payment.”
