The lists of leagues, teams and organizations continues to grow for Durham collaborative software startup Teamworks. The latest user is the Atlantic Coast Conference, which is using Teammworks to help coordinate the ACC men’s basketball tournament underway in New York.

Teamworks, which launched in 2004, notes that its platform coordinates tournament information, electronically process required forms, digitizes previously paper-driven processes and enables more seamless collaboration through the convenience of mobile devices.

By the way, the ACC also will use Teamworks for its baseball tournament.

We are excited to roll out the software which will allow us to be better connected to our teams.”

A host of clients already use Teamworks, which raised more than $6 million in venture funding last summer. Users include numerous NFL and MLB teams, USA Baseball, adidas Team Sales, Under Armour, and more.

Former Duke athlete Zach Maurides, Teamworks founder and president, recently talked with WRAL TechWire about the firm’s blossoming success.

  • Why does this wave of new clients seem to be building—communications complexity? More marketing?

Today’s athletic organizations are bigger and more complex than ever, and the modern athlete is tech-savvy and heavily dependent on their mobile device. For this reason, professional and collegiate teams are recognizing the importance and advantages of mobile technology, particularly when most coaches and staff are rarely at their desks.

In college sports, for example, centralizing information and creating a common communication model through Teamworks enables departments within a program working with student-athletes to operate seamlessly (i.e. coaches, staff, administrators, academic advisors, athletic trainers, nutritionists, equipment managers).

The transitive nature of the athletics industry has greatly contributed to our widespread recognition. For example, when coaches and administrators transfer to new organizations, they commonly advocate the value of Teamworks and soon after implement the platform within their new location.

  • Why are clients choosing Teamworks as a solution vs. other possible alternatives?

Our clients choose Teamworks because it is specifically designed to enhance the daily operation of athletic organizations, catering to the industry’s demands as a mobile workforce. Our platform is dynamic and agile, easily tailored to each new client’s needs.

  • What is your revenue model and how is this working?

Like many SaaS [software as a service] companies, we are a subscription based model. The Teamworks platform is licensed to our clients in yearly increments.

  • Are you hiring? If so, in what areas?

We are hiring and have open positions on our client services, development and sales teams. We have nearly tripled in size in the last 12 months and are excited to add more to accommodate the high demand.
