Retired General Martin Dempsey, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Duke students to “light someone’s fire” during his recent address as part of Duke University’s Distinguished Speaker series.

“The way transitions become manageable is if they’re done with a moral compass,” Dempsey told Duke Dean Bill Boulding. “You’ve got to have a moral compass.”

Dempsey recently retired as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the most senior military officer in the United States.

“Four decades in the military that ended with a four-year spell as the most senior military officer in the United States taught Martin Dempsey a thing or two about managing change,” Duke notes.
