Touting a solution to providing an affordable means of desalinating water, SAROS wants you to help get the company rolling.

SAROS is a Charlotte- and Wilmington-based startup with what it calls “environmentally conscious desalination technology that turns wave energy into fresh, clean water” launched a fundraising campaign on Tuesday at Indiegogo.

SAROS is an acronym for its technology:

Swell Actuated Reverse Osmosis System.

The company wants to raise $25,000 to fund further development of its technology.

“There are over 793 million people without access to fresh water. To solve this issue, we’ve created SAROS, a wave-powered desalination system which uses the energy in waves to access the nearly limitless supply of water found in our oceans,” the company says.

“We’re completely removing the dependency on electricity and fossil fuels, and creating one of the first environmentally conscious desalination systems that will allow us to bring affordable fresh water to coastal areas across the globe.”

“Zero emissions”

SAROS says its technology it is “eco friendly.”

“Typical desalination processes can be taxing on the environment, especially coastal communities,” the company says. “Unlike traditional methods that require a huge amount of power, typically generated by burning fuel oil, SAROS uses clean, renewable wave energy and produces zero emissions and minimal salt brine concentration.”

SAROS began in 2013 as a project by then-University of North Carolina-Charlotte engineering students Chris Matthews and Justin Sonnett.

The goal was “to prove that it is possible to sufficiently pressurize water and perform Reverse Osmosis (RO) using only wave energy,” the company says
