North Carolina-based startup Howgorithm aims to help people and businesses discover the best way to deal with processes through development and use of flowcharts.

“We make flowcharts easier to create, we give them a better design, and we’re unleashing their potential as a way for people and businesses to easily explain, share, and collaborate on processes,” says its CEO Jeremy Deaver.

The company will demonstrate its software at CED Tech Venture, which opens Tuesday in Raleigh.

This profile is the latest in a series about presenting companies published by WRAL TechWire in partnership with the CED.

The Q&A:

  • What is the focus of your business?

We are all about flowcharts. We make flowcharts easier to create, we give them a better design, and we’re unleashing their potential as a way for people and businesses to easily explain, share, and collaborate on processes.

  • What is the top pain point/business application you are seeking to address?

Whether at work or at home, we often come across processes that we’ve never done before that we have to figure out how to do for the first time. Some of the most searched “how-to” topics are “how to get a job” and “how to buy a house”. When we encounter processes like these that we don’t know how to do, we can research online, ask a friend, or wing-it and hope for the best. Regardless of which method we use, how do we know that our way of doing a process is the best way?

Unfortunately we don’t know whether our way is the best until we’ve done it once or twice and possibly made some costly mistakes. It’s entirely possible that we may never know whether our way is truly the best way, resulting in making the same costly mistakes over and over. Few people or organizations are immune from this very expensive problem.

We at Howgorithm think this issue could be solved by improving the transparency and collaboration of process mapping across departments, organizations, and societies. In order to do this, flowcharts need to be easier to create and more eye-friendly, and we have solved each of these problems.

  • What makes it unique?

We have a searchable how-to flowchart library that is populated by users who can control whether to keep their flowcharts private, or whether to share them for the benefit of all. We also have a flowchart wizard that makes it much easier for people to quickly create flowcharts that look like they were made by a graphic designer.

  • Why should investors be interested in your firm?

We have 50 beta testers identified and anxious to begin using Howgorithm software. We also have a request from an organization with $1.5B in revenue to have an enterprise model built.

From a market size perspective, Digital Content Creation Saas is expected to reach $8.5B in revenues in 2016 with a CAGR of 41%. Monthly “how-to” searches of over 250M indicate strong potential interest from consumers.
