IBM plans to acquire EZSource, an Israel-based tech firm focusing on understanding and changing legacy enterprise applications to help clients embrace cloud, mobile and cognitive computing. With customers worldwide, EZSource says is speeds up and simplifies the process for adapting these apps.

Enabling enterprises “to evolve those legacy assets at the speed of business with reduced risk to the enterprise,” is a priority in the deal, IBM noted.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

EZSource is an IBM business partner. The firm launched in 2003 and rebranded from its original EZ Legacy name in 2013.

“The mainframe is the backbone of today’s businesses. As clients drive their digital transformation, they are seeking the innovation and business value from new applications while leveraging their existing assets and processes,” said Ross Mauri, general manager of IBM z [mainframe] Systems. “By adding EZSource’s technology to our enterprise DevOps and API management offerings, we are making it easier and faster for developers to modernize key applications that previously were manually intensive and many times required specialized skills.”

EZ clients include ING Life and 7-Eleven.

According to EZSource, its suite of services “dramatically reduces the enterprise’s applications management costs, improves its application development and maintenance speed, flexibility and quality of its deliverables and lowers the risk involved in application development and maintenance.”

IBM (NYSE: IBM) noted that EZSource “provides a visual dashboard to quickly and easily show developers which applications have changed to ease the process of modernizing applications, exposing APIs and more efficiently leveraging development resources.”

Big Blue believes that enterprises will need services such as EZSource as they embrace hybrid clouds and need to “reconcile the applications that reside on enterprise systems of record to digital forms of engagement such as mobile and social.”

IBM, while noting that 68 percent of IT production still runs on mainframes, sees EZSource as boosting its own digital transformation abilities offered to customers.
