Editor’s note: NCTA’s State of Technology Conference brought six emerging companies to the attention of investors at a startup showcase last Friday. Here’s a look at Raleigh-based Insight Finder, a potential machine learning star. WTW will be featuring other startups who took the showcase stage in upcoming reports in the “Startups to Watch” series.

DURHAM, N.C. – Raleigh-based Insight Finder, founded in 2014, sells an application performance assurance product that uses cutting-edge machine learning technologies to provide smart monitoring and predictive analytics services for any cloud system.

It says its products help customers save money and enhance performance by preventing service downtime and also makes performance debugging in production environments easy and practical.

Chao Huang, chief technology officer and cofounder, said the product can detect anomalous system behaviors before customers are affected and also explain why it occurred. It is automatic and requires no supervision.

His cofounder, Helen Gu is a leading expert in the field of distributed systems and predictive analytics. She is also associate professor at North Carolina State University and leads a research group supported by over $3.8 million research grants from NSF, NSA, ARO, Google, IBM and Credit Suisse. She published more than 60 research papers and has filed 9 patents (8 of them have been issued).

The company which has two people in Raleigh and two in New York City, has received National Science Foundation SBIR grants and seed funding totaling $600,000.

Right now Huang said, the company is focusing on customer feedback from tests. “We want to find out what people need and will pay money for,” he said.

He noted that he loved the attention at the NCTA event in front of a “huge audience” at the NCTA event.
