Data management is a hot space as the $7 .5 million in series a financing raised by Durham based Zaloni Partners , a data lake management company, shows.

The company disclosed the raise Monday.

A data lake stores raw unprocessed data.

The company closed the round led by Sierra Ventures, with participation from Baird Capital it said Monday.

The company, which has been experiencing 100 percent year over year growth from its data lake management solutions, will use the proceeds to fund further expansion of the Zaloni software suite, sales and marketing, research and development, and international expansion, it said in a news release.

Mark Fernandes, managing director of Sierra Ventures, will join Zaloni’s Board.

“Sierra has a history of making investments in transformational technologies in the big data space, including Teradata and Greenplum. Data Lake solutions are what businesses are demanding, illustrated clearly by Zaloni’s tremendous growth over the past twelve months, and an impressive customer list of Fortune 500 customers,” said Fernandes. “

Resolving the challenge

He also noted that companies have no lack of data, but need the ability to transform that data into meaningful business intelligence that is actionable. “Zaloni clearly resolves this challenge.”

The company’s flagship software, Bedrock, offers an integrated, data lake management platform for data visibility, governance and reliability. Introduced in late 2015, the company’s newest addition, Mica, provides the on-ramp for self-service data discovery, curation and preparation. The company said its founding team has deep experience with Hadoop and big data management.

Ben Sharma, co-founder and CEO said ih a statement, “Our mission is to empower businesses to transform, manage and utilize their data across the organization, transforming their data from simply being lots of data, to becoming their most valuable asset. Deriving actionable insights and true value from data means that organizations can better meet their customers’ specific need.”

There is a clear need for software platforms that simplify the management of data across the enterprise,” said James Pavlik, Partner at Baird Capital. “With Bedrock and Mica, Zaloni has paved the way to delivering on the promise of big data, turning it into knowledge and revenue.”

“ESG research shows analytics to be one of the two most important IT priorities in 2016. Yet as many IT organizations rush to build a data lake, they quickly realize that they still need to satisfy the strict demands of the business,” said Nik Rouda, Senior Analyst at ESG for Big Data, Analytics, and Data Managemen said in a statement.. “Zaloni has focused on creating the foundation for successful big data initiatives, and this new funding should accelerate adoption in the enterprise.”
