Lenovo is rolling out a variety of new devices at the Mobile World Congress this week in Spain. However, the world’s No. 1 PC manufacturer may make the biggest impact with a new global data service it says links devices across networks – and borders.

No more ext SIM cards needed, Lenovo says.

The service is “Lenovo Connect.”

Lenovo describes it as “a seamless communication service that works across devices, networks, and even borders. With benefits ranging from low-priced global roaming to enhancing customer engagement by leveraging Lenovo Big Data and cloud services, Lenovo Connect provides a simple, fast, and cost-effective connectivity solution for companies of all sizes.”

However, the service is only available now for Lenovo customers in China and across the Europe-Middle East-Africa markets.

Lenovo is not a new player in such wireless markets, having worked with network providers to operate as a so-called mobile virtual network (MVNO) operator and is one of the largest with more than 11 million users.

Through Connect, Lenovo says customers can “enjoy local pricing on Internet access when they travel to more than 50 countries around the world.”

Right now, the number of devices that can utilize the service is limited to some tablets, phones and ThinkPad devices.

In China, Lenovo’s first products to feature Lenovo Connect will be the LeMeng X3 smartphone and MIIX 700 tablet.

“With the dawn of 5G and the Internet of Things, we expect to see the telecom market expand exponentially,” said Wang Shuai, a vice president at Lenovo who also is general manager of Understanding Telecom. “Lenovo Connect and our MVNO services will help move us into the new, globally connected world by creating a seamless smart connection across networks, services and devices.”
