North Carolina’s jobless rate declined to 5.6 percent in December, but that doesn’t mean companies aren’t cutting jobs.

A report this week that Xerox is cutting 178 jobs in Cary in just one of nine layoff reports totaling more than 2,400 jobs as reported to the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The Xerox job cuts were disclosed in a report filed with the Commerce department on Monday. The layoffs are expected to be completed by March 22, and the company said the layoffs were “permanent.”

Other recent layoffs include 172 which will occur with the closing of a Walmart in Durham.

Daimler Trucks in Cleveland said it will lay off 936 workers by March 5, but it describes the cuts as “temporary.”

The next biggest cuts have come in Charlotte where the Carolina Medical Center is laying off more than 400 people, according to two notifications.
