Oracle, which has had a major presence in the Triangle since acquiring Tekelec since buying that company for $1 billion in 2013, is gearing up for a big expansion and hiring of more employees. A new campus also will be built in Austin, Texas.

The software giant made the announcement Tuesday.

The company confirmed to the Austin American-Statesman (http://atxne.ws/1kfy09m ) plans to build the new campus, which will be on 27 acres overlooking Lady Bird Lake. The company said that with the new campus, Oracle plans to grow its Austin workforce by 50 percent over the next few years.

Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) also is buying a nearby apartment building “for employee housing options and to support a work-life balance.”

In a formal announcement, oracle also said it will be adding more employees as part of a global expansion.

The move expands the presence of another rapidly growing California-based technology giant in Central Texas. Companies including Apple Inc., Google and Facebook are a ramping up their work forces in the area.

Jobs at the new campus will be primarily sales-oriented, including direct selling, lead qualification, prospecting and technical support.

“Austin was a natural choice for Oracle to invest and grow,” said Scott Armour, senior vice president of Oracle Direct, the firm’s cloud sales organization. “We already have a high-performing employee base in the region, and the surrounding technology community is teeming with creative and innovative thinkers. Our state-of-the-art campus will be designed to inspire, support and attract top talent — with a special focus on the needs of millennials.”

Oracle declined to disclose the size of its current local workforce, but the company has substantial operations in Central Texas in sales, marketing and semiconductor design.Oracle has between 1,000 and 2,000 employees here, according to the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce’s website.

Founded in 1977 and headquartered in Redwood City, Calif., Oracle is one of the world’s leading software companies. It has more than 130,000 employees worldwide, according to securities filings.

Redwood Shores, Calif.— To keep pace with rapid cloud growth, Oracle unveiled plans to construct a next-generation technology campus in Austin, Texas. The company also confirmed that it will purchase housing for employees to live affordably and conveniently nearby. Today’s announcement underscores Oracle’s commitment to its employees and to the cloud, as the company continues to hire aggressively around the world.

Bolstered by the new campus, Oracle will expand its team in Austin by more than 50 percent over the next few years. Job opportunities will largely be driven by growth in Oracle’s cloud sales organization, Oracle Direct. Recruitment efforts will focus on recent university graduates and technical professionals at early stages in their career.

Oracle plans to collaborate with local firms to design and build the campus in a phased approach which will include consolidation of our facilities from Oregon. During phase one, the 560,000-square-foot complex and parking development will be constructed on the waterfront of Austin’s Lady Bird Lake. An adjacent 295-unit apartment building will be purchased for employee housing options and to support a work-life balance.
