Cary-based SAS continues to rank among the best places to work in the world, according to Great Places to Work, which ranks its number 2 this year. This is the fifth year the company held one of the top two spots.

Anyone who has seen the SAS campus, which has its own gym, medical facility, cafeterias offering a wide variety of food, and endless free M&Ms, as well as a site featuring sculpture and art, doesn’t have much trouble understanding how SAS continually ranks as a best place to work.

SAS execs say there are sound business reasons the company ranks highly on best places to work surveys too.

In a statement, SAS CEO Jim Goodnight said, “Our employees can see that the work they do makes a difference, which motivates them to continually create new and better technology. My job is to provide an environment where they stay enthusiastic and proud of what they do. Because when they’re satisfied, our customers are, too.”

Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Jim Davis said in the announcement, “Happy employees are passionate about their job and are more creative. We encourage our folks to be authentic in all of their interactions, both with colleagues and customers. Doing so influences others to share their passion and creates an environment of mutual trust.”

o far this year, in addition to the US, SAS has also been among the top workplaces in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. The company ranked No. 1 in Greece. In addition, SAS was No. 6 among Best Multinational Workplaces in Europe. The Great Place to Work Institute has recognized SAS consistently since the organization was founded in 1980 to identify companies that have created great workplaces.

To be eligible for the ranking, companies must appear on five or more national Great Place to Work lists in the past year and have more than 5,000 employees worldwide. At least 40 percent of employees must work outside the company’s home country.
