AT&T plans to launch its GigaPower high speed Internet service in Durham on Monday. AT&T said it would bring high speed service to Durham, Raleigh, Cary, Carrboro, Winston-Salem, and Chapel Hill last year when it was chosen as a provider for the Next Generation Network North Carolina.

Durham is the last of those cities to get the GigaPower service, and the company says Greensboro is next.

No immediate details on pricing and packages were disclosed.

AT&T, Durham Mayor Bill Bell, the Durham Chamber of Commerce will announce the new service 9 a.m. Monday at the AT&T retail store on Fayetteville Road, Durham.

AT&T North Carolina President Venessa Harrison and area elected officials and community leaders will be at the event to discuss its benefit to consumers and small businesses.

Gigabit service has had positive economic development effects in cities where it is available.

Because AT&T does not serve Durham with its wired services, reports say it required some private-public cooperation to install the fiber infrastructure.
