AT&T is the No. 1 wireless provider in the Raleigh metro area for the second consecutive time, based on independent testing by RootMetrics. Verizon is second. But T-Mobile is rising fast.

AT&T led the top performance in all tested categories but one: Text, in which Sprint was No. 1.

In the most recent statewide testing, Verizon and AT&T shared the top spot.

For the latest Raleigh survey, testers for RootMetrics traveled nearly 1,400 miles, conducted more than 26,000 tests, and also tested access in more than 30 indoor locations between March 13-20. It was the seventh time the company has tested the Raleigh area. Tests are done twice annually on average across the nation’s largest 50 metros as well as at airports for another set of surveys.

AT&T won the “RootScore Award” honor with a score of 99 on a scale of 100.

Verizon was second at 98.2 followed by T-Mobile (98.1) and Sprint (94.6)

However, T-Mobile showed growing strength in the market, more than doubling its download speed on average to 17 megabits per second from 8.4 mbps in the previous study conducted last October.

T-Mobile’s upload speeds also surged, averaging 13.4 mbps, up from 6.7 mbps.

Testers also reported that T-Mobile dropped no calls.

Verizon also increased upload speeds, averaging 11.8 mbps compared to 8.1 mbps in the last test.

Overall, AT&T ranked first in:
