Cree – literally – is the spotlight for sport’s biggest event Sunday night.

You may have seen ads showing up on TV touting Cree’s (Nasdaq: CREE) LED bulbs. But on Sunday Cree’s biggest advertisement for its lighting technology takes center stage, lighting up the Super Bowl in Phoenix.

For the first time, a Super Bowl will be played in the bright but less energy-consuming LEDs that were used in fixtures installed at the mammoth University of Phoenix stadium by Ephesus Lighting.

In fact, Cree says the LEDs will use 75 percent less energy to bathe players and spectators in lights and provide the illumination needed for a global TV audience.

Ephesus used nearly 45,000 Cree LEDs in 312 fixtures. They replaced 780 conventional metal halide fixtures.

Noted Joe Casper, founder and chief technology officer of Ephesus Lighting: ”The capabilities of LED technology have changed the way we view sports lighting. This was a great opportunity to showcase our innovative lighting technology in a venue known as a leader in introducing new ideas to the sports marketplace.”

The Super Bowl is the second major public showcase for Cree in recent months.

Last June, Cree’s LEDs were used to light up the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

Cree also launched an LED “smart bulb” designed to work with the growing number of smart home systems and apps.
