Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, a graduate of N.C. State’s Industrial & Systems Engineering school, returned recently to his alma mater to deliver a speech about the dangers of global warming. Pachauri says mitigation is required and it must be a global effort.

“Adaptation will not work after a certain stage – we have to reduce greenhouse gases,” Pachauri said. “Mitigation has to be a global effort.”

Pachauri is chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He and that organization shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore in 2007.

The IPCC recently presented a new report at the United Nations, which formed it along with the World Meteorological Organization.

Pachauri also called for more sustainable development.

“It is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” he said. “We cannot have sustainable development with climate change.”

The speech was sponsored by NCSU’s Office of International Affairs.
