What’s happening with the North Carolina Next Generation Network?

Director of Technology Services at Town of Cary, Bill Stice, who is a member of the NCNGN steering committee, is part of the speaker lineup for WRAL TechWire’s conference “Fiber Transforms the Triangle” on Oct. 13 at SAS.

NCNGN, which chose AT&T to build the network, is working with the telecommunications network now to map out plans and initial deployments. Once built, the network will cover much of the Triangle and Triad. NCNGN is a group of universities and city governments who are working together to bring gigabit-speed Internet and related services to toe region.

Stice joins a growing lineup of expert speakers, including representatives from AT&T, Frontier Communications, NeoNova, the City of Wilson, and other companies. More speakers will be disclosed shortly.

“Fiber Transforms the Triangle,” a WRAL TechWire Executive Exchange event, is being hosted by SAS.

MCNC is a sponsor of the event.

Blair Levin, former chief of staff at the Federal Communications Commission and a recognized international authority on broadband networks, will be the keynote speaker for the event.

Joe Freddoso, former chief executive officer at MCNC, which built the state’s first statewide fiber-optic network, will moderate a panel discussion featuring service providers. They will discuss what their networks offer for commercial and consumer clients and detail the timeline for change in the Triangle.

Another panel will discuss how businesses, from startups to healthcare providers, can cash in on the coming wave.

Mark Johnson, chief technology officer at MCNC and a former executive with Internet 2, also is part of the speaker lineup.

Investor and former telecommunications executive Steve Vanderwoude will be participating as well.

Each speaker and panel will take questions and there will be time for networking with other WRAL TechWire Insiders.

SAS, the world’s largest privately held software company, was one of the first firms to embrace the Internet’s potential.
