AT&T “confirmed” Wednesday that it will build a fiber-optic network for ultrafast Internet and entertainment services in Charlotte.

Garner, Apex and Morrisville remain on AT&T’s consideration list.

The company already is committed to building fiber in the Triangle and Winston-Salem as part of the North Carolina Next Generation Network initiative.

AT&T (NYSE: T) is rapidly advancing plans for expansion of its U-verse Internet and entertainment network to support gigabit-to-the home services under the name “GigaPower.”

Gigabit speed is 10 times faster than traditional cable broadband speeds and enable users to download a high-definition movie in 36 seconds or less.

However, AT&T did not disclose a timeline for delivery of service in Charlotte.

“We are working through those details now and will share more once we get closer to launch,” AT&T spokesperson Josh Gelinas told WRAL TechWire.

Locations and prices also were not disclosed.

AT&T in recent days has confirmed gigabit services for several other cities across the country.

“For well over a century AT&T has been committed to bringing the latest, most advanced technology to our Charlotte customers and today’s announcement is the latest step in fulfilling that commitment,” said Venessa Harrison, president of AT&T North Carolina, in a statement.

“Smart public policy decisions, such as adopting competitively neutral local ordinances and modernizing state regulatory statutes, play a key role in driving investment. Today’s announcement reflects the wisdom of the forward-looking leadership of Mayor Clodfelter and other state and local leaders who have worked diligently for many years to create a public policy climate that encourages investment in advanced technology in Charlotte and in North Carolina.”

AT&T said in April that it was considering some 100 cities for GigaPower services.

Triangle communities covered by the Next Generation Network initiative include Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Winston-Salem.

Apex, Garner, Morrisville, Gastonia, Greensboro and Huntersville also are being considered for fiber deployment.

“We are very pleased AT&T will be deploying its ultra-high speed fiber network here in Charlotte,” said Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter. “AT&T’s networks helped us become a hub for international business and banking. This new network will move us to the next level in building a vibrant, world-class and globally-connected city. We look forward to working with AT&T as they bring this exciting new service to our community.”

U-verse with GigaPower is being rolled out in Austin, Texas where it is competing with Google Fiber.

Also selected for service are Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Nashville.
