DURHAM, N.C. – AT&T said Friday that between 2011 and 2013, wireless and wireline investments in Durham and Chapel Hill totaled more than $90 million with more than $1.6 billion spent across North Carolina networks.

“I’m excited that AT&T is continuing its commitment to make new and better technologies available to serve consumers and stimulate economic growth, especially considering that attracting private investment remains a challenge in some communities,” said state Rep. Larry Hall (D-Durham).

Advancing its Project Velocity IP (VIP), an investment plan to expand and enhance its wireless and wired IP broadband networks, AT&T in 2013 made 58 network upgrades in the Durham/Chapel Hill area, including new cell sites, addition of wireless and wired network capacity, and new broadband network connections.

Additionally, AT&T expanded the reach of its network, providing access to U-verse Internet and video services and delivering fiber-optic connections to 140 business locations at seven multi-tenant business buildings and business parks.

“AT&T is making robust investments locally to make sure that residents can take full advantage of the latest services and tools, and that businesses have the speed they need to compete and grow,” said Robert Robert Doreauk, AT&T regional director of external affairs, in a prepared statement.

AT&T also announced on Wednesday plans to hire more than 3,000 retail sales and sales management employees nationwide over the next several months. The also just opened a new “Store of the Future” on Capital Boulevard,
