Xerox Commercial Services LLC has notified state officials that it will lay off more than 500 people next month at its technical support and customer service call center in Cary.

The company filed notice of the layoffs last month under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

Most of the 508 positions being eliminated are customer care assistants, but some managerial, training and quality assurance jobs are affected as well.

The layoffs are to take effect “on or about” Nov. 14, Xerox said in the letter.

“These reductions, while very difficult decisions, reflect the changing business requirements of our clients,” Xerox spokesman Bill McKee said in an email to WRAL News. “The changing demands of Xerox’s clients produce cycles of hiring. We continue to hire new employees in many locations and will continue to hire in Cary to meet the needs of other clients.”

The job losses are tied to one client, whom McKee didn’t identify.

The company provides customer support to industries ranging from technology, communications and financial services to retail, government and health care.

“Different call centers require different skill sets,” he said. “At times, we may ramp up or slow down, depending on the changing needs of our clients.”

The Cary layoffs include:

  • 450 customer care assistants
  • 25 customer care supervisors
  • 3 custom care managers
  • 9 quality assurance specialists
  • 8 training specialists
  • 10 customer care specialists
  • 1 program manager
  • 1 sales manager
  • 1 general manager

Separation packages will be provided to those who qualify, McKee said.

Xerox has operated the call center since it acquired Affiliated Computer Services in 2010. The company laid off 67 people at a call center in Raleigh in August, but McKee said it still employs about 3,200 in the Triangle.
