The body count in IBM’s (NYSE: IBM) latest “resource action” in North America alone continues to creep higher.

Internal documents obtained by the union seeking to represent Big Blue workers show that nearly 2,800 workers have been told to find new jobs elsewhere in the company or leave.

The downsizing that IBM has called a “rebalancing” has spread like a contagion to 41 work groups – and the layoff totals don’t include hundreds if not thousands of workers being let go in other countries.

IBM is spending $1 billion on this reorganization. And the casualty count has jumped from nearly 2,300 across 31 work groups on Thursday night.

However, IBM remains mum on the official count.

North Carolina has yet to receive any formal notification of layoffs – and it may not. IBM employs an estimated 10,000 people across the state.

The “resource action” documents were obtained by Alliance at IBM, the union seeking to represent IBM workers.

The rebalancing as IBM’s CFO has termed the layoffs and reorganization started last Wednesday.

“Hundreds” have been affected in North Carolina, a source familiar with the action told WRALTechWire. And several RTP workers have posted news at the Alliance website.
