Color Greenpeace red, IBM a bit greener and a bit cooler when it comes to being “green.”

The folks at Greenpeace were a little red in the face – i.e. a bit embarrassed – Friday, issuing a correction about IBM and moving Big Blue up its annual “Cool IT Leaderboard.”

To its credit, the environmental advocacy organization issued a former correction about information that had led to a 5-point penalty of IBM in its report.

The restoration moved IBM back into the top 10 at eight place.

“Greenpeace’s Cool IT Leaderboard, released on April 24, contained an error,” the group said in a statement.

“Greenpeace penalized IBM by five points for its membership in the American Legislative Exchange Council, a lobby group that works to block clean energy and climate policy. IBM has alerted us that they have no affiliation with ALEC at this time, so we have restored the five points, moving IBM from 11th place to a tie for 8th.

“We regret the error.”

The revised list:

1. Cisco

1. Google (tie)

3. Ericsson

4. Fujitsu

5. Sprint

6. Wipro

7. HP

8. IBM, Alcatel-Lucent, Vodafone
