Novozymes, which operates its North American headquarters in Franklinton, N.C., has landed a federal grant worth as much as $2,5 million for research into ways to turn corn leaves and stalk, or stover, into fuel for vehicles.

Novozymes secured the grant in partnership with MBI.

The grant covers two years.

“Novozymes’ work will support the Energy Department’s focus on research, development and demonstration efforts to achieve affordable, scalable and sustainable advanced biofuels,” the company said in a statement. ”Novozymes has already reduced the cost of enzyme production for biofuels by 90 percent. Once the new screening process is proven, it can be used to rapidly develop tailored cost-effective enzyme solutions for specific industrial biorefineries.”

The firm has received two earlier grants from the Energy Department, one worth $13.8 million and the other totalling $12.3 million.

Novozymes is a global provider of enzymes to biofuel providers.
