Charlotte-based Belk Inc. is adding about 150 jobs to deal with its growing online sales.

The decision reflects several made by Belk in recent months as it broadens a push into ecommerce.

“This is the fastest growing part of our company,” said Adam Orvos, executive vice president of human resources for Belk. “We’re investing in the company, and hiring talent to build out these digital capabilities will be a cornerstone of this growth.”

Belk also is adding more office space as part of the expansion. The firm is leasing some 50,000 square feet of space near its current headquarters in Charlotte.

Earlier this year, Belk chose Triangle-based ChannelAdvisor for a variety of ecommerce support services.

Last month, Belk extended the contract with another provider for ecommerce related marketing and support.

Just over a year ago, Belk announced it was using technology from Cary-based SAS to help stock inventory.

The company headquarters currently has about 1,000 workers.

Belk did not provide a salary range, but described the positions as management jobs in information technology and electronic commerce.

Belk reported that electronic sales increased about 70 percent in the third quarter of the year.

Belk spent about $4.5 million on an online fulfillment center in Jonesville, S.C., as part of its online sales effort. That center opened in June and is expected to create more than 120 jobs in the next five years in Union County, S.C.
