RTI International has named a “second in command.”

James Gibson, chief financial officer at RTI International since 2000, is taking over as chief operating officer in what is a newly created position.

“Jim will be my second in command and will work with me across the institute to help us achieve our vision,” said Wayne Holden, who recently was promoted to the chief executive officer’s job at RTI. “His strong business sense and financial insight will be a significant help to me as we move forward.”

Holden was executive vice president of Social, Statistical and Environmental Sciences at RTI before taking the CEO job. He has worked at RTI since 2005.

In the COO job, Gibson “will be responsible for developing long-range plans and supporting investments, and will also guide the strategy for RTI’s laboratory-based business,” RTI said in the announcement.

Gibson launched his career in finance at Ernst & Ernst in 1976 and then worked for Hughes Aircraft and Rockwell International. He is a graduate of State College of New Jersey-Ramapo, earned an MBA at the University of Southern California and a doctorate at Duquesne.
