RTI International is expanding its presence in China by opening an office in Beijing.

The  has worked on a wide variety of projects in that country since 1998.

RTI is one of the oldest institutions in RTP, established as an independent, nonprofit research, development and technical services nonprofit institute in 1958.

Last month it opened an office in New Delhi, India.

RTI has more than 2,800 employees and operates in more than 40 countries around the world.

The China office will focus on research and training in health, the environment, energy and education.

“RTI’s growing presence in Beijing increases our ability to develop cooperative partnerships with Chinese researchers, scientists and policymakers,” said Wayne Holden, executive vice president of Social, Statistical and Environmental Sciences. “These partnerships are vital to understanding the many social, scientific and environmental challenges associated with China’s growth and changing demographics, and will provide access to expertise that can support our U.S.-based research and scientific operations.”

Two weeks ago, Holden was named as RTI’s next chief executive officer. Current CEO Victoria Haynes is retiring.
