IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) rank first and fourth respectively in the second global information and communication technology company rankings for sustainability from the research firm Gartner and the World Wildlife Federation.

Lenovo ranked 17th.

Twenty-eight firms were ranked in the study. The first list was compiled in 2008.

Companies were invited to participate in the program.

"The good news is that we don’t see anyone going backwards," said Simon Mingay, research vice president at Gartner.

IBM, Fujitsu, HP, Cisco and BT made up the top five.

Results of the study will be discussed at a symposium Nov. 8-11 in France.

IBM employs some 10,000 people in the Triangle area. Cisco has some 4,000 workers on its RTP campus.
