RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – will build a new East Coast distribution center in Johnston County, the company and Gov. Bev Perdue announced Monday.

BD (NYSE: BDX) will invest $38 million in the facility.

More than 180 jobs will be created, beginning in 2012.

North Carolina will provide a $600,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund as an incentive for the project, Perdue said. The grant requires a local match.

The average pay for the jobs will be $28,771 plus benefits. Average Johnston County wages are $31,408, the governor’s office said.

“BD’s presence is another example of why North Carolina has been consistently ranked among the nation’s top states in biotechnology and life sciences,” Perdue said in the announcement. “Working in partnership with top quality companies such as this, I will continue to focus on creating good jobs for North Carolina’s workers.”

The company develops manufactures and sells medical supplies, devices, laboratory instruments, antibodies, reagents and diagnostic products.

Its business units include BD Medical, BD Diagnostics and BD Biosciences. BD maintains its headquarters in New Jersey.

BD already has a presence in Research Triangle Park and in the Triad with five facilities in all across the state that employ some 900 people.

“We are very pleased to be expanding in North Carolina, where BD now employs approximately 900 associates and has had a presence since 1972,” said Stephen Sichak, BD senior vice president for the firm’s integrated supply chain, in a statement. “Establishing our new distribution center in Johnston County will enable BD to reduce cycle times and enhance the operational effectiveness of our entire supply chain. Additional benefits include the skilled workforce, transportation infrastructure and supportive government officials in the region.”
