Art Padilla, a professor of management at N.C. State University, is the new head of the department of management, innovation and entrepreneurship in the school’s College of Management.

The department, which was established in 2007, is designed to link NCSU professors who are teaching and conducting research in leadership, strategy, human resources, organizational development, entrepreneurship, technology transfer and technology management.

The former head of the department, Steve Barr, is returning to teaching and research.

“We brought them together because there is tremendous synergy between their fields of study, all of which contribute to organizations’ efforts to innovate and gain competitive advantage,” said Ira Weiss, the College of Management dean. “With Art’s expertise in leadership development, he is the perfect choice for this position. He has the professional toolkit for working with the faculty to further develop the synergy between them and to continue advancing our curriculum development and faculty recruitment activities.”

Padilla is author of the book “Portraits of Leadership” and has won numerous awards, including the Holladay Medal in 2006. The medal is the highest honor the NCSU Board of trustees awards to faculty members. He earned a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. Padilla has taught and been part of NCSU’s administration for 18 years.
