Honda Aircraft Company formally launched construction of its headquarters and manufacturing facility at Piedmont Triad International airport on Wednesday.

The facility will be used to build the new HondaJet.

Including equipment, the complex will cost $100,000, according to the company. It will cover 369,000 square feet.

The Piedmont region won an intense recruiting battle for the plant in February.

"By breaking ground for this new Honda Aircraft facility today, we take the next important step in getting HondaJets into the skies tomorrow," said Michimasa Fujino, chief executive officer of Honda Aircraft Company, Inc. "With the warm reception we have received in the Triad, and the great response HondaJet has received from our customers, we are confident of a very bright future here in North Carolina."

HondaJet anticipates making delivery of its first jets in 2010.

The company has had a research and development presence in Greensboro since 2001.
