Note: This article has been corrected to reflect the fact the vehicle operates autonomously.Insight Racing, which is based in the Triangle, will be among the teams competing for a $2 million prize when robotic vehicles are matched against each other in a 142-mile race in October.

The race is sponsored by the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and is intended to help further development of robotic vehicles for use by the US military.

Insight, founded by Grayson Randall, entered an autonomous vehicle in an earlier competition covering 2.7 miles over a demanding course in Virginia. Insight is one of 40 teams culled from a field of more than 200 to compete in the final race.

Autonomous control means the vehicle operates without any human intervention.

DARPA sponsored a 142-mile race across the Mojave Desert in 2004, but none of the entries from 15 teams completed it.

Students from North Carolina State University’s Computer Science Department are working with Insight on the project.

Insight Racing is part of Insight Technologies, a company launched in 2003 to develop robotics.
