Digital Blue, which sales a line of interactive entertainment and learning devices, was awarded a $100,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The grant is the first round of support by the NSF to fund the company’s collaborative, Internet-based education initiative for middle school students.

Students in grades 6-8 will perform experiments using Digital Blue’s QX3+ Computer Microscope, and post and analyze the digital images on a “virtual lab” website.

Investigations include such topics as regional water quality tracking; rock and mineral properties; plant growth; and the physiology of flight in birds.

Digital Blue, based in Atlanta, starts the project next month, with about a dozen schools participating in the America, Russia, and other regions. The company will make an in-kind contribution of $50,000 worth of its microscopes to these schools.
