Students and teachers at Raleigh’s Carroll Magnet Middle School will take possession Tuesday of their newest learning tool, Samsung Galazy tablets funded by Verizon. The school is one of eight in the nation to be named to the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) program directed by non-profit Digital Promise.
One thousand tablets, donated by Verizon to Digital Promise, come with a Verizon Wireless data plan, providing users with always-on access to the Internet.
Students and parents will get instruction Tuesday for the care and use of their tablets, then they will be allowed to take them home.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to incorporate technology into their learning in very meaningful ways, both in class and at home,” said Todd Wirt, Wake County Public School System assistant superintendent for academics. “Teachers have spent a lot of time preparing to make the best possible use of these tablets to ensure a great learning experience.”
Digital Promise has been working with Carroll teachers to develop plans for the use of the tablets in the classroom and for at-home learning activities. They plan to use the tablets for video production, online research, QR (Quick Response) code “scavenger hunts” and website development.
