My mom was put in this position last year, when my dad's company cut loose all of the retirees and their spouses (widows in my mom's case) with 90 days notice. The letter that arrived explaining what was going on looked like junk mail. We always wondered how many elderly folks never realized what was going on.
If American companies are going to walk away from their retirees then I plan to walk away from them. For the first time in my life I now plan to seek out non American companies for as many of my purchases as possible.
