Many entrepreneurs and investors are hopeful that 2015 is the year in which crowdfunding legislation becomes law in North Carolina. WRAL TechWire’s next Executive Exchange event will focus on that top, and headlining the program is North Carolina’s Department of Commerce Secretary who also wants crowdfunding enacted.

Sec. John Skvarla will deliver the keynote address.

Other speakers at the Feb. 17 program include active Triangle investor Mark Easley, who is a leading advocate for crowdfunding, and other Triangle entrepreneurs and funders.

Justin Miller, co-founder and CEO of fast-growing Raleigh startup WedPics, also will be speaking.

More speakers will be added.

Crowdfunding is not the only option for startups, and Miller will discuss his successful efforts to find capital.

“We have hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs in this state. And crowd funding is a mechanism by which small entrepreneurs can go raise $1 million to $2 million easily without all of the bureaucratic morass of traditional securities laws,” Skvarla said earlier this month.

Crowdfunding in North Carolina could smaller investors to put $1,000 a piece into a project without the formalities normally required with stock transactions.

Entrepreneurs are seeking crowdfunding approval as a source for capital other than that raised through so-called angel investing and funding from institutional investors such as venture capitalists.
