Frontier Communications (Nasdaq: FTR), which acquired Verizon’s landline phone business in the Durham area two years ago, is rolling out an expanded ethernet broadband service.

The company says the service “addresses the increasing bandwidth needs among mid-size and large businesses.”

The metro ethernet service is designed to enable faster Internet access as well as wide-area networking.

“Metro Ethernet’s speed, capacity and flexibility give businesses and institutions more control, better services and
greater opportunities to reduce costs,” said Dennis Bloss, general manager for Frontier in North Carolina. “Numerous business sectors, including medicine, education,  banking, tourism and entertainment, can realize immediate benefits from the simplicity and scalability of Frontier  Metro Ethernet.”

The service will support voice, data, video and other applications at faster speed than available through cable, according to Frontier.
