Epic Games generated some media attention itself in New York on Wednesday night at the unveiling of the new Sony PlayStation.

The Cary-based videogame firm demonstrated how its new game development engine, Unreal Engine 4, will perform on the forthcoming system.

Epic showcased a real-time demonstration titled “Elemental.”

“We are thrilled to build onto our long-established success with PlayStation,” said Tim Sweeney, Epic’s founder and chief executive officer, in a statement “Unreal Engine 4 is expertly designed for the next generation of game development and the outstanding power of PlayStation 4. Today’s demonstration offers a preview of what developers can accomplish using our tools to create games for PlayStation 4.”

The demo includes a “fiery mallet-wielding Elemental knight” in a dark, forbidding world filled with flames.

Epic’s Unreal engines are used by game developers worldwide across multiple platforms, and its selection by Sony to help kickoff the new PlayStation reflects Epic’s strength within the industry as a developer of cutting-edge technology.

Several companies have already disclosed their choice of Unreal 4 for new titles under development.

Next month, Epic launches its own “Gears of War: Judgment,” the fourth title in the award-winning Gears series. Microsoft is the publisher.
