Digital storage company EMC Corp., which employs about 1,600 in NC, most in the Triangle, said Tuesday that its shareholders have approved its $60 billion merger with Texas-based Dell Inc.

The deal is expected to close before the end of the year. The merge companies will operate as Dell Technologies

Massachusetts-based EMC (NYSE: EMC) said about 98 percent of its shareholders representing 74 percent of its outstanding common stock approved of the merger. EMC stock rose almost 2 percent to $28.07 following the news.

In a statement, Joe Tucci, EMC Chairman and CEO, said that he and the board “worked diligently to represent, what we believe is the best outcome for all stakeholders.”
