Pharmaceutical firm Biogen has named a new general manager for its nearly 1,300 employee operations in Research Triangle Park. He is Joydeep Ganguly, who holds an MBA from N.C. State and is active in the Triangle community.
The company’s announcement follows:
“Machelle Sanders is taking a new role within Biogen Idec as vice president of product operations for the company’s multiple sclerosis franchise. She will oversee the company’s multiple sclerosis portfolio from development, through launch to patients around the world. In her new role she will remain in RTP.
“As a result, Joydeep Ganguly was named vice president of manufacturing and general manager of Biogen Idec Research Triangle Park (RTP), effective immediately. In this role, he will oversee the RTP operations, where nearly 1,300 employees work at the company’s two campuses that span Wake and Durham Counties.
“Sanders led the RTP operations since 2011 and oversaw extraordinary growth at the facility. Over the past three years, Biogen Idec grew employment by more than 50 percent, introduced four new products, opened a new administrative building, and won numerous awards.
“Biogen Idec is in a period of tremendous growth, fueled by new innovations in products for our patients. We have strong leadership throughout the organization, and I’m proud that both Machelle and Joydeep are well positioned for their new roles,” said John Cox, executive vice president of Pharmaceutical Operations and Technology. “Our RTP facility is one of the most advanced biotechnology manufacturing facilities in the world, and it plays an important role in our future growth.”
“The RTP facility is the company’s largest manufacturing facility, and the largest biotechnology company in North Carolina. Biogen Idec manufactures ALPROLIX™, AVONEX™, ELOCTATE™, PLEGRIDY™, and TYSABRI™ in RTP, among other clinical products. The company also runs its Patient Services call center from the RTP facility.
“Since 2013, Ganguly led the team that started up the company’s Oral Solid Dose manufacturing operations in RTP, where TECFIDERA™ will be manufactured. He joined the company in 2006 after engineering roles at what is now Grifols in Clayton, N.C. New leadership for the Oral Solid Dose facility will be named in the future.
“Ganguly holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA degree from North Carolina State University. He sits on the Board of Directors at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, N.C., and on the Supply Chain Resource Cooperative Advisory Board at North Carolina State University.”
