Alternative fuels company Maverick Biofuels has changed its name to Maverick Synfuels.

The Research Triangle Park company says the new name reflects the its growth strategy for producing synthetic fuels and chemicals from low-value feedstocks and waste streams.

Maverick had developed a way a way to turn waste and low-value feedstocks into the the building blocks of renewable fuels. The company’s technology converts landfill waste, biomass and natural gas into synthesis gas. The company Maverick builds modular production platforms based on unique combinations of thermochemical and methanol synthesis technology. These modular plants can be deployed in oil fields, dairy farms and landfills to convert waste gases, such as methane, into fuels and specialty chemicals.

“Maverick has evolved from being a biomass-based company to a company that can convert multiple low-value bio and fossil based feedstocks into higher-value liquid transportation fuels and chemicals,” Maverick Synfuels CEO Sam Yenne said in a statement.
